16 Things to Avoid When Writing For Your UI​


You write for your UI with an intention of making it useful to people, right? Therefore, you should ensure that it is simple, clear, and concise to enhance usability. Below are 16 things to avoid when writing.

  1. Technical Terms and Specific Words

Use of words that are meant for specific professions should be avoided. Words that are specifically meant to describe certain things should also be left out since the reader will not be able to understand them easily. Therefore, use simple terms that all users can understand without any difficulty. By doing so, you will be catering for all readers, whether beginners or advanced users.

The following is an example of using technical terms in error message:

It’s hard to tell the targeted audience in the above statements, right? Is it system administrators or office workers? 

However, if your audience is familiar with the terms you intend to use, it is okay. If not, avoid them.

  1. Use of Future Tense to Describe The Action Avoid using any other tense to explain product behavior. Use simple verb form whenever you want to write in the past or future. Avoid : ” Information has been received” Use : ” Information received”

  2. Avoid Long Detailed Information

There is no need to explain every detail in the initial stages of interaction. It is more important to disclose information on features.

Empirical tips:

  • Put down segments that can be scanned to enhance easy finding. Keep statements under 30 words.
  • In each message, always ask yourself if the user really needs to know it.
  1. Usage of Pronoun “We”

Rather than focusing on the user and what they are doing with their app.

Avoid : ” To help you get started, we are showing you these tweets .”

Use : ” Get started with these tweets.”

This rule can be exempted when a person does an action for a user. A good example is shown below. Here, usage of “we” is right.

Avoid : ” Your application will be revealed, and you will receive the feedback in a few hours.”

Use : ” We want to review your application and give the feedback within a few hours.”

  1. Combining Pronouns

“Me” / “My” and “You” / “Your” are usually confused because they are in a similar scenario.

Avoid : ” Edit your choices in My Portal.”

Use : ” Edit choices in My Portal.”

  1. Replacing Numbers with Words

Avoid replacing numbers with words.

Avoid: I have seven templates”

Use: “I have 7 templates”

  1. Avoid Capitalizing All Letters

As Miles Tinker puts it in his work: Legacy of Print, written in all-capital letters. However, when a normal sentence case is used, readers read fast saving time. Capital letters should only be used in logos and acronyms. It is advisable to use sentence-style capital letters for titles, headings, labels, and menus.

Use: “Browse menu”
8. Avoid Exclamation Language

Avoid using exclamations as they appear as shouting. Instead, use polite words.

Avoid: “See the improved features of the software!”

Use: “Welcome”

  1. Avoid Totality and Over-promising

Avoid: “We’ll never give you irrelevant information”

Use: “You’ll receive only crucial information”

Avoid disclosing how great a feature is but rather what it does.

Avoid: Great transactions at shops you will like”

Use: “All your files in one folder”

  1.  Avoid Unclear Error Messages

Error messages are inevitable. However, you can incorporate them as part of user experience. Ensure the error messages sounds like they are put down for humans. Let the message clearly state:

What went wrong and why?

What’s should the user do to solve the error?

  1. Blaming User

If you want to retain your users, never blame them. Yes, they can make mistakes, but pointing fingers will only make the matter worse.

Instead, design the message in such a way that you don’t directly blame the user. Shift attention to user problem not error.

Avoid: “You’ve entered a wrong password”

Use: “The password cannot be used. Please ensure its 8 characters long.”

  1. Wordiness

Avoid using lots of words. Be simple and direct for users to understand you. Leave out extra words that do not add value.

Avoid: You must enroll for classes?”

Use: “Enrol for classes?”

  1.  Avoid “Are You Sure”

The phrase adds no value in effective writing for your UI. Therefore, avoid it.

Avoid: “Are you sure you want to move the file?”

Write: “Move the file”

  1. Avoid Gender Discrimination

Avoid words that create gender ambiguity.

Avoid: I saw their mails

Use: I saw his mail

Always specify gender by use of his/her to create a clear difference

  1. “OK” Button in Dialogs

An effective dialog box isn’t only about asking users what to implement but clarifying each button. Though the ‘OK’ button is the convention for many dialogs, many apps use more user-friendly approach to dialog boxes. Since some users ignore dialogue box messages, you should give users specifically labeled buttons for certain actions instead of ‘OK ’buttons to confirm an action, as it reduces use errors.

For instance, buttons for “Add photo” dialog

Avoid: “OK|Cancel”

Use: “Remove|Keep”

  1. Culture-Based Language

Avoid culturally specific language as it may be hard to understand, therefore, inappropriate.

Avoid: “She has hit it out of the park!”

Use: “She did a good job”


When writing text in your app, it should complement your visual UI. Therefore, ensure simplicity, conciseness, directness, and efficiency. Everyone, regardless of culture, geographical location and language should be able to understand the writing without any struggle.

10 Machine Learning Algorithms You Should Know in 2018


In 2017, the word big data became quite popular and it will continue to prevail even in the coming years. This article provides a list of the most commonly used ML algorithms which you should be aware of.

  1. Random forest

First, from the original data, select randomly and form different subsets.

The original data is called Matrix S and contains1-N rows. A, B, C are the features and C stands for categories.

Create, let’s say, M sets of random subsets from S.  

From these subsets, we then get M sets of decision trees. When you add new data into these trees, it is possible to get M sets of results.

Using certain attributes, classify a data set into groups. At each node, execute a test using branch judgment. Further split the data into two groups. Tests are carried out based on the existing data, and the new data being added is classified to the corresponding group. Group data according to some features. Each time the process takes a step forward, there is a judging branch. The work of the judgment is to divide the data into two phases, and the process repeats itself. When there is incoming data, the computer categorizes it into the right leaves.

  1. K-NearestNeighbour

When a new datum comes in, determining the category in which it falls involves looking at the category that has the most points nearest to it. An example is distinguishing between a cat and dog. We base on our judgment on these two features- claws and sound.

The known symbols used to represent categories are circles and rectangles. This brings us to our next question- what do stars represent?

When K=3, the nearest three points are connected by these three lines. The circles are also more. This means the star belongs to the cat.


  1. Markov

Markov Chain is made up of states and transitions. An example is a Markov Chain that is based on ‘the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog’ ‘.

The first step is to set every word under a state, then to calculate the probability of state transitions. By just a single sentence, these probabilities can be calculated. By using large data of texts in the computer, you want to get a larger state transition matrix.

  1. Neural Network

The neural network is made up of neures and neures connections. The first layer is called the input layer while the last is called the output layer. Hidden and output layers both have their own classifiers.

In Neutral Network, an input can end up into at least two classes. Once an input comes in the network, it is activated, and the result passed down to the layer that is next. Scores in the output layer are the same as the scores for each class.

In order to separate the two classes from hyperplane, it’s best to use the hyperplane that leaves the maximum margin from both classes. Given that Z2 is greater than Z1, the green one is a better choice.

The class that is above the line is greater than or equal to one while the one below it is less than or equal to -1.

The result is the expression of total margin. The goal is to maximize the margin, which we do by minimizing the denominator.

We get a weight factor (a, 2a) and substitute in the equation.

  1. Adaboost

It is a boosting measure. Boosting refers to the process of gathering the classifiers that lacked satisfied results and generating a classifier with better effects.

From the illustration above, you can see that the individual trees 1 and 2 have no good effects when put independently. However, when we input the same data and add up the results, we get some more convincing results.

Taking a handwriting recognition below as an example, the panel extracts a lot of features such as beginning direction and distance from beginning to the ending point.

When training the machine, it gets each feature’s weight. It, therefore, does little classification, so it has little weight.

But the alpha angle here has great recognizability so the weight issue will be dealt with. The result will be achieved considering all these features.

  1. K-means

The first step is to divide the data into three different classes. The biggest part is the pink one while the smallest is the yellow one. Select 3, 2, 1 as the default, then calculate the distance between the rest of the data and the defaults. After that, classify it into the class with the shortest distance.

Once you classify, calculate the means of every class and make it the new center.

Stop when there are no more changes.

You may be given a question and asked the category in which it belongs. Using the Bayes rule, you can easily solve it.

Did you know that the human brain can tell what user elements we are looking at from shadows?
