16 Things to Avoid When Writing For Your UI

16 Things to Avoid When Writing For Your UI

FRONTEND UI DESIGN

You write for your UI with an intention of making it useful to people, right? Therefore, you should ensure that it is simple, clear, and concise to enhance usability. Below are 16 things to avoid when writing.

  1. Technical Terms and Specific Words

Use of words that are meant for specific professions should be avoided. Words that are specifically meant to describe certain things should also be left out since the reader will not be able to understand them easily. Therefore, use simple terms that all users can understand without any difficulty. By doing so, you will be catering for all readers, whether beginners or advanced users.

The following is an example of using technical terms in error message:

It’s hard to tell the targeted audience in the above statements, right? Is it system administrators or office workers?

However, if your audience is familiar with the terms you intend to use, it is okay. If not, avoid them.

  1. Use of Future Tense to Describe The Action Avoid using any other tense to explain product behavior. Use simple verb form whenever you want to write in the past or future. Avoid : ” Information has been received” Use : ” Information received”

  2. Avoid Long Detailed Information

There is no need to explain every detail in the initial stages of interaction. It is more important to disclose information on features.

Empirical tips:

  • Put down segments that can be scanned to enhance easy finding. Keep statements under 30 words.
  • In each message, always ask yourself if the user really needs to know it.
  1. Usage of Pronoun “We”

Rather than focusing on the user and what they are doing with their app.

Avoid : ” To help you get started, we are showing you these tweets .”

Use : ” Get started with these tweets.”

This rule can be exempted when a person does an action for a user. A good example is shown below. Here, usage of “we” is right.

Avoid : ” Your application will be revealed, and you will receive the feedback in a few hours.”

Use : ” We want to review your application and give the feedback within a few hours.”

  1. Combining Pronouns

“Me” / “My” and “You” / “Your” are usually confused because they are in a similar scenario.

Avoid : ” Edit your choices in My Portal.”

Use : ” Edit choices in My Portal.”

  1. Replacing Numbers with Words

Avoid replacing numbers with words.

Avoid: I have seven templates”

Use: “I have 7 templates”

  1. Avoid Capitalizing All Letters

As Miles Tinker puts it in his work: Legacy of Print, written in all-capital letters. However, when a normal sentence case is used, readers read fast saving time. Capital letters should only be used in logos and acronyms. It is advisable to use sentence-style capital letters for titles, headings, labels, and menus.

Avoid: “BROWSE MENU”
Use: “Browse menu”
8. Avoid Exclamation Language

Avoid using exclamations as they appear as shouting. Instead, use polite words.

Avoid: “See the improved features of the software!”

Use: “Welcome”

  1. Avoid Totality and Over-promising

Avoid: “We’ll never give you irrelevant information”

Use: “You’ll receive only crucial information”

Avoid disclosing how great a feature is but rather what it does.

Avoid: Great transactions at shops you will like”

Use: “All your files in one folder”

  1.  Avoid Unclear Error Messages

Error messages are inevitable. However, you can incorporate them as part of user experience. Ensure the error messages sounds like they are put down for humans. Let the message clearly state:

What went wrong and why?

What’s should the user do to solve the error?

A typical error may indicate “data is invalid” but fails to give the reason. Ensure the message is clear. Image credit: Material Design

  1. Blaming User

If you want to retain your users, never blame them. Yes, they can make mistakes, but pointing fingers will only make the matter worse.

Instead, design the message in such a way that you don’t directly blame the user. Shift attention to user problem not error.

Avoid: “You’ve entered a wrong password”

Use: “The password cannot be used. Please ensure its 8 characters long.”

  1. Wordiness

Avoid using lots of words. Be simple and direct for users to understand you. Leave out extra words that do not add value.

Avoid: You must enroll for classes?”

Use: “Enrol for classes?”

  1.  Avoid “Are You Sure”

The phrase adds no value in effective writing for your UI. Therefore, avoid it.

Avoid: “Are you sure you want to move the file?”

Write: “Move the file”

  1. Avoid Gender Discrimination

Avoid words that create gender ambiguity.

Avoid: I saw their mails

Use: I saw his mail

Always specify gender by use of his/her to create a clear difference

  1. “OK” Button in Dialogs

An effective dialog box isn’t only about asking users what to implement but clarifying each button. Though the ‘OK’ button is the convention for many dialogs, many apps use more user-friendly approach to dialog boxes. Since some users ignore dialogue box messages, you should give users specifically labeled buttons for certain actions instead of ‘OK ’buttons to confirm an action, as it reduces use errors.

For instance, buttons for “Add photo” dialog

Avoid: “OK|Cancel”

Use: “Remove|Keep”

  1. Culture-Based Language

Avoid culturally specific language as it may be hard to understand, therefore, inappropriate.

Avoid: “She has hit it out of the park!”

Use: “She did a good job”

Summary

When writing text in your app, it should complement your visual UI. Therefore, ensure simplicity, conciseness, directness, and efficiency. Everyone, regardless of culture, geographical location and language should be able to understand the writing without any struggle.

10 Machine Learning Algorithms You Should Know in 2018

10 Machine Learning Algorithms You Should Know in 2018

DISRUPT AI

In 2017, the word big data became quite popular and it will continue to prevail even in the coming years. This article provides a list of the most commonly used ML algorithms which you should be aware of.

  1. Random forest

First, from the original data, select randomly and form different subsets.

The original data is called Matrix S and contains1-N rows. A, B, C are the features and C stands for categories.

Create, let’s say, M sets of random subsets from S.

From these subsets, we then get M sets of decision trees. When you add new data into these trees, it is possible to get M sets of results.

Using certain attributes, classify a data set into groups. At each node, execute a test using branch judgment. Further split the data into two groups. Tests are carried out based on the existing data, and the new data being added is classified to the corresponding group. Group data according to some features. Each time the process takes a step forward, there is a judging branch. The work of the judgment is to divide the data into two phases, and the process repeats itself. When there is incoming data, the computer categorizes it into the right leaves.

  1. K-NearestNeighbour

When a new datum comes in, determining the category in which it falls involves looking at the category that has the most points nearest to it. An example is distinguishing between a cat and dog. We base on our judgment on these two features- claws and sound.

The known symbols used to represent categories are circles and rectangles. This brings us to our next question- what do stars represent?

When K=3, the nearest three points are connected by these three lines. The circles are also more. This means the star belongs to the cat.

  1. Markov

Markov Chain is made up of states and transitions. An example is a Markov Chain that is based on ‘the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog’ ‘.

The first step is to set every word under a state, then to calculate the probability of state transitions. By just a single sentence, these probabilities can be calculated. By using large data of texts in the computer, you want to get a larger state transition matrix.

  1. Neural Network

The neural network is made up of neures and neures connections. The first layer is called the input layer while the last is called the output layer. Hidden and output layers both have their own classifiers.

In Neutral Network, an input can end up into at least two classes. Once an input comes in the network, it is activated, and the result passed down to the layer that is next. Scores in the output layer are the same as the scores for each class.

Example

From the example above, input passes through different knots to generate different scores.

  1. Logistic Regression

If the probability of the predicting target is greater than zero and equal to or less than 1, the simple linear model is cannot be used. This is because when the domain of division does not lie within a given level, the range could be bigger than the laid out interval.

Therefore, we would have to go with this one.

How does one get this model? It should be noted that the model has to either be larger than or equal to zero and less than or equal to one

Transforming the formula gives us the logistic regression model

We can get the corresponding coefficients by calculating the original data. This is the logistic model we get.

  1. Support Vector Machine

In order to separate the two classes from hyperplane, it’s best to use the hyperplane that leaves the maximum margin from both classes. Given that Z2 is greater than Z1, the green one is a better choice.

The class that is above the line is greater than or equal to one while the one below it is less than or equal to -1.

Find the distance from the point to the surface using the equation in the graph

The result is the expression of total margin. The goal is to maximize the margin, which we do by minimizing the denominator.

,

Example:

Using 3 points to determine the optimal hyperplane, define weight vector=(2,3)-(1,1)

We get a weight factor (a, 2a) and substitute in the equation.

  1. Adaboost

It is a boosting measure. Boosting refers to the process of gathering the classifiers that lacked satisfied results and generating a classifier with better effects.

From the illustration above, you can see that the individual trees 1 and 2 have no good effects when put independently. However, when we input the same data and add up the results, we get some more convincing results.

Taking a handwriting recognition below as an example, the panel extracts a lot of features such as beginning direction and distance from beginning to the ending point.

When training the machine, it gets each feature’s weight. It, therefore, does little classification, so it has little weight.

But the alpha angle here has great recognizability so the weight issue will be dealt with. The result will be achieved considering all these features.

  1. K-means

The first step is to divide the data into three different classes. The biggest part is the pink one while the smallest is the yellow one. Select 3, 2, 1 as the default, then calculate the distance between the rest of the data and the defaults. After that, classify it into the class with the shortest distance.

Once you classify, calculate the means of every class and make it the new center.

Stop when there are no more changes.

  1. Naive Bayes

Below is an NLP example;

Determine if the texts’ attitude is positive or negative.

To solve the problem, choose a few words

Words and their count

You may be given a question and asked the category in which it belongs. Using the Bayes rule, you can easily solve it.

In this class, that question becomes “what’s the probability of occurrence of the sentence?”

9 Best Mobile App UI Design Trends in 2018

9 Best Mobile App UI Design Trends in 2018

FRONTEND DESIGN UI

Are you having a problem catching up with the dynamic trends in mobile app UI designs? Below are the top 9 UI design trends to look out for in 2018.

Mobile app User Interface design trends are changing now and then due to changing user needs. This is not, however, mean that mobile ap ++ ps UI design trends in 2018 are unpredictable. After a keen analysis of UI design trends and innovations in the past few years, we found some common factors that could help predict trends in 2018 were discovered. Therefore, below are 9 trends in mobile app UI designs for you in 2018.

1). Strong Color and Font Contrast to enhance Legibility

An excellent UI design should attract a user’s attention. This can be created by using a strong color and better font contrast. For instance, making use of fonts of different types, sizes, orders, and styles creates a sense of hierarchy and space. Use of different strengths of colors creates sharp contrasts. The two aspects also make the UI design very attractive.

2). Custom illustration interfaces

UI design, and it will undoubtedly play even a bigger role and gain more popularity in 2018. You can expect mobile application interfaces with different styles of illustrations like simple style, handwriting, popular painting style illustration, and hand-drawing. These styles are very interesting, distinctive and impressive to the application users.

3). Simple curves and geometries

When compared to a complex and changeable UI design style, quite a huge number of designers opt for a simplistic and inherent style in mobile app UI design. For instance, compared to a phone app interface covered by different graphics, colors, pictures, animations, and quite sophisticated elements, a phone interface with simple curves, geometries, and buttons could be more effective. Such an interface enables the user to focus on the major functions and features of a mobile app.

4). Level of Transparency

Modifying the transparency of components can make them have different results. Therefore, when designing an interface, opacity setting of various components is a good way to create an impressive design. Adjusting settings of transparency for various graphics or colors can thus bring out a beautiful glass texture in different components of the app interface. This is the reason behind the making of this method in designing mobile app logo.

Generally, in spite of the fact that they are in the process of becoming effective, the UI design works, the transparency of various components will increase in 2018.

5). Voice-Enabled interfaces

Voice-enabled interfaces make it easy for users to use the applications. Similar to using Siri, a user can simply start or log in a voice-activated mobile app. In fact, mobile apps with voice ordering services were the most popular on the internet in 2017, and will undoubtedly be the most popular again in 2018.

Fingerprint enabled interfaces will therefore play a crucial role in mobile app interface designs in days to come.

6). Functional animations and interactions

UI interface can help improve the user’s experience with the app This is a trend that will not stop at 2017 but will spill all the way to 2018.

In addition, micro-interaction, which was first introduced and highly endorsed by Dan Saffer, will continue to be updated and used by designers in the coming of 2018.

Micro-interactions are meant to improve our interaction designs for some details of mobile app interfaces. They enable users to communicate with them quickly and obtain immediate feedback. This is undoubtedly a positive trend that designers should continue using their mobile app UI designs.

7).Overlapping Effects

Overlapping of colors, fonts, and graphics makes the UI designs more attractive and unique to the user and creates a sense of space. This explains why using different mobile app UI design elements has become popular with designers.

In addition, sometimes overlapping of colors, fonts, and graphics and combining with shadows makes the entire mobile app interface designs fantastic and impressive.

8). Color gradients

In an attempt to design great backgrounds, logos, and buttons for mobile app interfaces, an increasing number of designers are using color gradients in their works. Have you discovered why? The response is simple. Despite selecting one color, you can also display a picture on a white background.

As a result, the color gradient will therefore be popular in 2018.

9). Mixing trends

In 2018, designers do not just use a single method in designing mobile app UI designs. Instead, they will combine two, three or even four methods to produce wholesomely combined designs with improved and unexpected effects.

Conclusion

Mobile app UI designs are complex and usually changeable to suit user needs. Therefore, whether or not these trends will take roots in 2018, a mobile app UI designer is always expected to be creative and innovative. The designer should therefore also have the needs of the app in mind as well as to combine scientific and technological aspects on a timely basis in developing new designs. If all these methods are considered and put to practice, it will be easy to come up with amazing mobile app UI designs.

7 Golden Rules for Creating Great UI

7 Golden Rules for Creating Great UI

FRONTEND DESIGN UI

The User Interface is one of the most critical parts of any software product. To increase the chances of success, designers and developers follow a few fundamental interface design principles. These principles represent crucial concepts used to guide software design. In this guide, I’ll share seven golden rules to help you create a beautiful user interface.

Who will benefit from this guide?

This guide is meant for:

1.  Developers looking to design their own amazing user interface

2.  UX designers seeking to give their portfolio a better appearance

Why I decided to get UI skills

As a UX designer, I thought I had everything I needed to succeed. Unfortunately, I didn’t have UI skills, and I came to learn the importance of creating beautiful user interfaces the hard way. First, my UX consulting clients preferred to hire someone with a variety of skills. Secondly, my portfolio was terrible, and it portrayed a bad impression about my work and skills. Having majored in engineering, it became my main excuse for failing to build something that looks good.

But soon I realized that I couldn’t let my excuses be the cause of my failures. Without any knowledge about aesthetics, I decided to learn through hard analysis everything there is to know about the aesthetics of apps. After hours of digging, practicing, and detailing what works, I picked up a few lessons for building a great UI.

How these rules can help you

As a nerd, you might not have an intuitive understanding of beauty and balance, but with these guide, you’ll be able to create a good-looking interface. This guide focuses solely on application rather than theory.

Light comes from the sky

Did you know that the human brain can tell what user elements we are looking at from shadows?

Light from the sky illuminates the upper part of objects, thereby casting shadows below the objects. As a result, the top side is always lighter and the bottom side darker. For instance, the lower eyelids of a person do not appear shaded, but if you happen to shine some light on them, you will notice the difference.

Everything works under this principle, including user interface. All UI elements have shadows below them. Though screens are flat, people have been able to make things on the screens appear to be 3-D.

10 Big Data Trends to watch in 2018

10 Big Data Trends to watch in 2018

AWS CLOUD

Open Source

The future of Big Data will be dominated by the open source applications like Spark, Apache Hadoop, and others. Forrester Research claims that this tendency is increasing 32.9 percent per year.

The Internet of Things (IoT)

The Internet of Things (IoT) allows an access to data from various devices. Unsurprisingly, this year promises is to become a revolution in the interconnectedness of smart home technology. With the majority of people in the developed world routinely operating multiple devices, loT attempts to fill the void between data collection and enable communication between different sources.

Cloud computing

Businesses across the globe have started to use cloud computing for their IT activities. Primarily, many companies are using cloud to run the apps. Predictions shows that this percentage of companies relying on cloud computing will only continue to increase over the next few years. Big data Analytics is another important predicted trend in the IT world that influences not only how the cloud is used, but also addressing the growing demand and providing opportunities for innovation.

Machine Learning and AI

These technologies are on the spotline, and more companies have begun investing in it. Machine learning as a branch of AI, analyze big data without being explicitly programmed.

Chatbots

The arrival of messaging apps furthered the development of chatbots. Chatbot is a software program that conducts a communication with a user via textual methods. With a help of chatbots, you can carry out a number of different tasks, such as chatting with users, helping with purchases or pushing social media activities as much as like the famous app or also known as Crowdfire.

Predictive Analytics

Big data helps businesses to get the predictions of future behavior. In few words, predictable analysis brings the opportunity to customers ‘to know their customers’, and consequently maximize the profit and choose the right marketing strategy.

Cybersecurity

The last and arguably the most important field where changes must occur is cybersecurity. Today we live in two worlds, with the second being played out or inside of our computers. As our lives continue to advance and become digital, the demands for cybersecurity and policing of the Internet will continue to expand.

As cybersecurity adapts and develops to meet its society’s needs, its demand, function, and role will be forced to evolve due it its security. Anti-piracy companies will help by blocking illegal content, and new technologies will protect our data and computers from attacks, and other kinds of damage.

Business Intelligence

The companies’ decision-making will be based on big data. Even if it’s a small company, ignoring the importance of data science will lead to regressive management and loss of the profit. The use of Business Intelligence from Cloud will drastically increase. All decisions regarding market growth or expansion into new regions, or markets will be based on Big Data.

Big Data Focused Intelligent Apps

Such application incorporates Big data Analytics to provide personalization and improved service. AI and Machine learning will be implemented in almost every app.

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has already taken an effect; this has got many organizations and companies to ensure they comply with such regulation.

When question were asked about the function of Big Data in their respective organizations, about 66 percent of the respondents stated that they took cognizance of it to be either “strategic” or “game-changing”. Only 17 percent stated that big data was nonetheless “experimental” at their companies, and some 17 percent described their efforts as “tactical.”

These various perspectives on big data make it clear that this is one trend that is not going to fade away anytime quickly.

Predictions were given about the future of big data and what companies would face if they see big data as a strategy. Our company, MicroMoney, uses Big Data to provide our customers with the best service, and banks with the most accurate information to serve customers they couldn’t serve before.

Big Data and analytics will drive modern business operations, and will not certainly reflect their overall performance; corporations will take an encompassing approach to facts and analytics.

Organizations will create end-to-end architectures that will allow data management and analytics from the center to the edge of the organization; and company executives will make Big Data and analytics as part of their enterprises’ strategy, which shall permit big data professionals to take up new roles and create business growth for corporate excellence.
